Booked & Balanced for Estheticians & Spa Professionals
Building Your Clientele From Scratch (Without Discounting Yourself)
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of looking at your calendar… and seeing a whole lot of white space. Trust us—we’ve both been there.
Whether you’re brand new to solo esthetics or just moved locations (again), the “starting over” phase can shake your confidence. But don’t panic. This is actually your chance to build something better—and more aligned—than ever before.
We’ve got a few tried-and-true strategies that can help you fill those books without losing your sanity or slashing your prices.
What Actually Works (When You’re Not Booked Yet)
The hardest part of building clientele is putting yourself out there—consistently. And yes, it takes more than a cute Instagram post.
📍 Get hyper-local: Drop off cards or leave service menus with nearby hotels, OBGYNs, salons, banks, and boutiques. Call the local chamber or Main Street office and ask about upcoming events. Volunteer. Show up. People book with people they know exist.
📞 Pick up the phone: This one’s scary, but powerful. Call or text past clients, friends, or acquaintances. Tell them you’re rebuilding, and you’d love to see them in your chair. Be specific. Offer a one-time perk (like a complimentary add-on) to get them through the door.
🧠 Plan your marketing like your appointments: Set calendar alerts. Schedule your promotions around school calendars, holidays, and community events. Don’t wait until you’re slow—plan ahead.
Value, Not Discounts
Here’s the truth: a 10% off special isn’t going to change anyone’s life. But a bonus brow wax? Or a facial add-on they weren’t expecting? That’s memorable.
Instead of discounting your time, offer something with high perceived value and low cost to you. It keeps your pricing integrity intact while still giving clients a reason to book now.
The Tools We Love
💬 Email/Text Campaigns – We swear by these for flash openings and reconnecting with clients who haven’t visited in 6+ months.
🎟️ Silent Auction Donations – Especially in small towns, donating a facial to a nonprofit auction gets your name in front of new people who want your service.
Build Trust, Not Just Buzz
Once someone’s in your room, that’s your moment. Make it count.
🧴 Recommend two products they actually need
📅 Rebook them before they walk out
📸 Snap a (consented) photo for your socials
💌 Grab their email and follow up
Clients who buy retail have up to an 80% higher chance of returning. Don’t be afraid to educate, recommend, and lead. You’re the expert.
Final Thought: Just Start
You don’t have to do everything at once—but you do have to do something. Don’t let a slow season mess with your mindset. Use it to get scrappy, get strategic, attend classes, read more books, listen to more podcasts ; ) , and build your foundation.
You’ve got this. And we’ve got you.
